Diversity was the "theme" of my freshman (and only) year at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Our class was 98% white. I guess by diverse they meant the rich and meaningful distinctions in our haircolors?!?? Apparently, at "the Public Ivy" - as Miami has dubbed itself - "irony" must be covered in sophomore level English. I wouldn't know; I was liberated from the crawling-plant-free brick walls after 30 credit hours.
Many of the goings-on this past week, however, have reminded me of that blissful time. The Maryland democrats throwing oreos at Michael Steele. Or arguing over whether the great Lt. Gov. of their state should be described as an "Uncle Tom" or as "Sambo". How bout liberal shill Andy Rooney pining for the days when he didn't have to struggle to get his dentures around all those pesky syllables in African-American. He prefers the term "Negro". How enlightened. I suppose he regrets having to share a drinking fountain with Ed Bradley but them's the breaks ya lovable ole curmudgeon you. Oh yeah and there were all those pale Senators decrying SCOTUS nominee Sam Alito's whiteness. I loved watching the 9 white female and 31 white male democrat Senators tell us - and with a straight-face mind you - how another white Supreme Court judge would mean that the High Court wouldn't represent America's rich cultural and racial diversity. I mean c'mon their 44 seat Senate caucus has 2 whole Hawaiins, 1 Latino and 1/2 a black guy. And while women make up 51% of the population they constitute nearly 21% of the Democrats in the Senate! Diversity, indeed!
Yet, the party of Robert "KKK" Byrd continually tries to rag on the Republicans for not being diverse enough. The GOP blogosphere belies this notion, though. This blog alone is staffed by a full quarter gay Republicans - the only higher instances of sexual orientation diversity are Nancy Pelosi's district, the Boystown section of Chicago, a Madonna concert dance troupe, and the WNBA. And the blogosphere is filled with countless examples of the true diversity of the GOP. Some of my favorites: well, there's me. Michelle Malkin, the author of another great new book, UNHINGED - available for $18.45 on Amazon right now (where it's in the top 25 - do yourself a favor and buy a copy and watch it rise in the ranks, too). The GOPVixen whose Fox-ier news and commentary can be found here. Another great one is The Malcontent who (aside from having one of the coolest nom de guerres in the pajamahudeen) has some nice pop culture news and analysis thrown in with his unique punditry. And check out Libertas blogging at HipHopRepublican.
I believe that as the campaigns of Michael Steele in Maryland, Ken Blackwell in Ohio, Keith Butler in Michigan, and Lynn Swann in Pennsylvania, among others gain more attention, the shrillness of the Democrats "diversity" attacks will only increase - to their own detriment. Especially when some of these campaigns are more closely dissected. An old white Democrat (Cardin) is pushing an African-American (Mfume) out of the way to face Steele in Maryland. A younger white male Democrat (Strickland) is pushing an African-American mayor (Coleman) out of the way to face Blackwell in Ohio. And I am sure the Ohio Democrats will choose another old white male to run against the stupendous incumbent State Treasurer, Jeanette Bradley.
And one more thing I am sick of - liberal gays bashing conservative gays. You all are the ones being used so keep those empty self-loathing hypocrite remarks to yourselves aiiight. We each have the same number of openly gay Representatives serving in Congress (that'd be 1 a piece kids: y'all got Barney Frank [from the very all-white, all-male Massachusetts delegation] and we have Jim Kolbe from Arizona). And what have you gotten from the Dems for all your donations and volunteer work? DOMA and a whole lotta lip service - and that's it. You shrieked when Bush (cleverly) stoked his conservative base with the boogeyman of gay marriage and yet still fawn over the Clintons who used the same political tactic in (excuse the phrasing) ramrodding the Defense of Marriage Act through Congress. Those in impeccably decorated glass houses should not throw stones.
So, anyway, all of you brunettes and redheads, blondes and baldies, dred-locked and faux-hawked devotees of this blog should check out the well worthwhile and wonderfully diverse aforementioned blogs.
