Ann Richards, former governor of Texas, passed away tonight.

My parents always said I should not take pleasure in the misfortunes of others and despite my natural inclination toward the sadistic, I have been trying to work on that so to that end here is what I have to say about this woman's passing....................

Five Years Later

On this, the fifth anniversary of 9/11, we observe another day of prayer and remembrance.  Our thoughts and heartfelt prayers go out to all of the victims of 9/11 as well as to all of the troops and their families.

Here are a few poignant excerpts from President George W. Bush's 9/20/2001 speech to a Joint Session of Congress:

And, finally, please continue praying for the victims of terror and their families, for those in uniform, and for our great country.  Prayer has comforted us in sorrow, and will help strengthen us for the journey ahead.....

Great harm has been done to us.  We have suffered great loss.  And in our grief and anger we have found our mission and our moment.  Freedom and fear are at war.  The advance of human freedom -- the great achievement of our time, and the great hope of every time -- now depends on us.  Our nation -- this generation -- will lift a dark threat of violence from our people and our future.  We will rally the world to this cause by our efforts, by our courage.  We will not tire, we will not falter, and we will not fail.....

I will not forget this wound to our country or those who inflicted it.  I will not yield; I will not rest; I will not relent in waging this struggle for freedom and security for the American people.

The course of this conflict is not known, yet its outcome is certain.  Freedom and fear, justice and cruelty, have always been at war, and we know that God is not neutral between them.

Fellow citizens, we'll meet violence with patient justice -- assured of the rightness of our cause, and confident of the victories to come.  In all that lies before us, may God grant us wisdom, and may He watch over the United States of America.

Thwarted Plot

The British have done it again by thwarting a plot to blow stuff up.  Nicely done Brits.

Check out this blog by Cassandra which richly drowns in sarcasm.  In particular, pay close attention to the photoshopped picture of Helen Thomas which is one of the greatest things I've seen on this intranet thing in some time.

A Republican's best friend is......

....the Democrat pissed off by other Democrats.  Just like I don't believe for a minute that Paul McCartney was unaware of Heather Mills' porn past and then it just suddenly bubbled to the surface when she filed for divorce from the non-prenup-protected Beatle, I think I know who is responsible for all the recent coverage of John Murtha's past sins a-bubblin' to the surface today (Novak's column, Rush's monologue, freeper blog coverage etc etc etc).  I bet you anything the culprit is none other than House Democrat whip Steny Hoyer.  Isn't it interesting that although Murtha has been the face of the pull-out now crowd since last November, it is only days after he announces that he wants to replace Hoyer in the Dem leadership (if they win the House back in November, of course) that his past involvement in the ABSCAM scandal of 1979-1980 comes roaring back to life?

Murtha was an unindicted co-conspirator who testified against other Democrat congressmen who took bribes from a "Saudi sheik" who was actually a federal agent.  He was cleared by the Congression Ethics Committe on a completely partisan line vote.  Hardly seems like the type of person a party would be looking to lead the "culture of corruption" brigade?  Good job Rep. Hoyer!  We on the the better side of the aisle congratulate you.

Strange Bedfellows

Wizbang posts this letter from the NAACP regarding Sen. Byrd's filibuster of the Civil Rights Amendment in 1964:

"The one-man talkathon staged by Sen. Byrd for 14 hours last night and this morning indicates the extent to which a mind warped with hate and prejudice will go -- even in the hallowed halls of Congress.

"Sen. Byrd has not only done his state and our nation a great disservice, but has in addition exposed his family and friends to great embarrassment. The shame and stigma that attaches to his continuing acts against civil rights legislation is positive evidence that he is still a present-day advocate of the principles of the Ku Klux Klan.

"The sooner he is removed from the public and political scene, the better chance democracy will have to survive in America and the free world."

(emphasis added: the part about him being an impediment to a democratic and free world are as apt today as they were then).

It's just plain amazing that the krazy left has turned to krazy Sen. Byrd to be one of its spokesmen considering his history of intolerance and twisted hate.

Laughs from the Left - Revisited

I went back to a previous post from January 28, 2005 and I had to laugh.  The following is a quote I posted from a fellow blogger (who happens to be from the other side of the political spectrum) who chose hyperbole over reason:

I believe history will record January 6, 2005, as the day on which the United States of America completed a 4-year descent from democracy into dictatorship, by abandoning the rule of law in its electoral process, thus ensuring that the party in control cannot be removed.

I believe that when the history of these times is ultimately told, it will adjudge the above mentioned Senator and Representatives*, who stood up to this coup d'etat, as patriots and heroes, and to those who did not, as cowards and traitors.

The funny thing is I had to go back through the newspaper archives to figure out what he was talking about. Maybe future history (I know the term "future history" is just gibberish, but so was this posting) will remember Mr. Beckerman's patriots and heroes.
