Staples became a Liberal Stooge yesterday when it announced that content on Sinclair news programs was considered "among other factors" in its decision to pull its advertising dollars from Sinclair stations. The decision came in response to a letter-writing campaign by something called Media Matters for America, a liberal media group. The MMA does not think that advertisers should support any program that sets forth a conservative viewpoint.
I have never watched any news program on the Sinclair Broadcasting Group. However, this story made me extremely angry. An intelligent corporation should never give into a ideologically-motivated letter-writing campaign such as the campaign started by MMA. The problem with giving in is that the public perception now is that Staples is a left-leaning, Democrat-sponsoring organization. This could potentially turn off over 51% (at last count) of their target demographic. That is not smart business.
This is the letter I sent:
Dear Sir or Madam:
The purpose of this letter is to inform you that my family will no longer be shopping at your chain of stores because of your new very public determination not to advertise on Sinclair Broadcasting news shows. I will further instruct my secretary and her colleagues not to obtain office supplies at Staples.
I respect your right to advertise wherever you see fit and on whatever medium gains you the most profits for your shareholders. Conversely, I hope that you respect my right, guaranteed by the United States Constitution, to take my business elsewhere.
I am not necessarily a fan of Sinclair Broadcasting Group's news programs. However, I do not respect the spineless and very public way that Staples removed its advertising from Sinclair. Your officers and other decision-makers do Staples' shareholders and employees a great disservice by allowing your political ideology to take precedent over your shereholders and employees' interests. I am very disappointed with your decision.
Thank you very much,
I am a real rabble-rouser.
